Internship (student teaching) is the culminating field experience in the teacher education curriculum. Each student teacher is engaged in full-time teaching responsibilities for a fourteen-week period under the guidance of a certified, experienced mentor teacher and a university supervisor. Student teaching opportunities are provided at a variety of locations depending on the specific certification program.
The first step in applying for an internship is to submit an online application for placement to the Field Experience and Internship Office during the spring semester prior to the school year in which placement will be completed.
January 1- March 31: Time-frame to submit placement application for Fall semester internship
April 1- July 31: Time-frame to submit placement application for Spring semester internship
Procedures for submitting an online placement application
- Go to MyAthens Self-Service on the College of Education home page.
- Enter your Athens State email and password.
- Go to Student Tab.
- Select “Request for Internship Application”.
- Select the current term.

FINAL STEP – Clearance and Registration
- Once you are cleared, you will receive an email from the Teacher Education Services Department stating that you can register for your Internship course(s).

A Professional Review Board composed of education faculty members meets as needed to review unsatisfactory performance and progress of students referred by faculty members and intern supervisors. Actions that can cause students to be referred to the PRB may include but are not limited to, the following: an unacceptable score on Professional Dispositions; removal of a student from internship; academic misconduct; or inappropriate conduct. This review board also hears formal complaints from students. Recommendations are determined by consensus.
Removal from a school by the administration of that school or Athens State will result in immediate suspension from the internship. The PRB will meet to decide on a plan of action. Interns are not guaranteed a placement the following semester. Implementation of the corrective plan of action will determine gaining another opportunity to conduct internship.
No, internship placements are made during the fall and spring semesters only.
