Teachers of KENNIS Program to Help Meet the Needs of Alabama School Districts

Athens State University is pleased to introduce its newest scholarship program for Education majors, Teachers of KENNIS. Formerly Men of Kennis, Teachers of KENNIS seeks to increase the number of teacher candidates from various socioeconomic backgrounds and help them serve as effective classroom teachers from whom all students will benefit from academically, socially, and emotionally.

The scholarship program is open to aspiring Education majors who belong to a target population that is less prevalent within the teaching workforce. Funds from the scholarship program provide funding for tuition and books, while other benefits of the program include mentorship from experienced educators and peers, networking opportunities, academic support, PRAXIS Bootcamp, and professional development opportunities. “The ‘Teacher of KENNIS’ program was thoughtfully planned based on thorough research and feedback,” said Dr. Darlene Turner-White, Program Coordinator for Teachers of KENNIS and Professor of Early Childhood. “Its goal is to ensure that members are competent, confident, and empowered to become effective teachers, providing an environment where all children can learn and reach their fullest potential.”

The acronym KENNIS stands for Know, Empower, Nurture, Network, Inspire, & Succeed, qualities that the program strives to instill in its members so they can thrive in their own classrooms one day. “We have identified essential components to ensure our members are properly prepared to be effective classroom teachers on day one,” said Jaylen Wiggins, Center of Excellence in Education Development (CEED) Program Support Specialist. “The Teachers of KENNIS is an opportunity to empower, inspire, and be another positive role model in the lives of all students.”

“Teachers of KENNIS is not just about producing teachers; it’s about nurturing and shaping future teachers to provide better education for children, who are our future,” said Nathalia Owens, CEED Administrative Assistant. “This program provides financial support, academic support, and mental support. When we invest in teachers, we invest in the future of Alabama communities.”

The application deadline for Spring 2025 is October 15. For more information or to apply to the Teachers of KENNIS program, please visit www.athens.edu/TOK.
