November 16: W.P. Maxwell Scholarship
Each year the W.P. Maxwell Scholarship is awarded to a deserving individual of junior or higher standing in a college or university. This person needs to be majoring in a human services field. Preference will be given to students in the field of mental health, but those in related fields should also apply. This individual must hold home residence in Morgan County. The amount of the scholarship for 2009 is $400.

December 15: SMART Scholarship
The Science, Mathematics & Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship for Service Program has been established by the Department of Defense (DoD) to support undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) disciplines. January 2: 2010 Talbots Scholarship
The Talbots Charitable Foundation is proud to present the 2010 Talbots Scholarship Foundation and the inaugural Nancy Talbot scholarship award. This programs empowers women to enrich themselves through learning and achieve a college education later in life. February 1: American Cancer Society College Scholarship
To be eligible a student must have had a diagnosis of cancer before the age of 19, be under the age of 25, be a legal resident of AL, AR, LA, MS, TN and a US citizen, have a GPA of at least 2.5 or GED equivalent. For additional information, please see the link below.

March 1: Redstone Federal Credit Union’s (RFCU) Scholarship
Redstone Federal Credit Union’s (RFCU) Scholarship Program has been established to recognize, reward and help make possible the pursuit of higher education by its members. RFCU awards ten $2000 scholarships to students pursuing a higher education. Six of the scholarship recipients are members attending local colleges/universities including Alabama A & M University, J.F. Drake State Technical College, The University of Alabama in Huntsville, Oakwood University, Calhoun Community College, and Athens State University. The remaining four are awarded to members attending other institutions.

March 14: National Space Club-Huntsville Scholarship Program
The National Space Club’s scholarship program seeks to reward deserving students pursuing degrees in aerospace and science. The program is targeted at current students enrolled in ABET-accredited colleges or universities in pursuit of an engineering or science degree that would reasonably lead to a career in aeronautics or astronautics. Two scholarships are available for students attending ASU in the amounts of $2000 and $3000. Packets can be mailed to 300 N. Beaty Street, Athens, AL 35611, hand delivered to the Office of Student Financial Services or emailed to finaid@athens.edu.

March 15: AICPA Scholarship for Minority Accounting Students
Award amounts range from $1500-$3000 and selection is based on academic merit, leadership and commitment to pursuing the CPA credential.
To qualify, an applicant must:
*be a declared accounting major intending to pursue the CPA credential
*be a full-time undergraduate or graduate student who is an underrepresented minority in the accounting profession
*have completed at least 30 semester hours of college coursework, including 6 hours in accounting, maintaining a minimum overall and major

March 31: Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 511
Applicants residing in Limstone County must be a direct descendant of a Vietnam Era Veteran. Applicants residing outside of Limestone County must be a direct descendent of a Chapter 511 member. The veteran’s DD 214 must be included with the application. The applicant must be currently enrolled in a college or have a letter of acceptance from the college they plan to attend. The Andre Sobel River of Live Foundation is now taking essay submissions for the 9th annual Andre Sobel Award for young survivors of catastrophic illness. The award recipient will receive a $5000 cash prize. Survivors of serious illnesses ages 12-21 are eligible to apply.

April 8: American Public Works Association, Alabama Chapter
The APWA will award one or more $1500 scholarships for 2010. Scholarships are presented to deserving students striving to complete educational requirements for a career path in public works. These scholarships are available for basic degree work only and are not available for post-graduate academic pursuits. Degrees or majors in Public Administration, Civil or Environmental Engineering, are examples of related fields of study.

Parents and Children Together (PACT) is accepting applications for the Gail Hurst Scholarship established in honor of PACT’s founder.
Eligible recipient must be:
*Morgan County, AL resident (permanent residency, not school residency)
*Junior or higher at an accredited college or university (may include graduate students) enrolled in a human service major (social work, education,
Counseling, political science, etc.)
Eligible recipient must provide:
*A copy of student’s transcript to prove good standing with the school
*A 200 word essay describing how student would incorporate or apply information regarding child abuse prevention in their professional pursuits

May 1: John Gyles Education Awards
Awards are available each year to students in both Canada and the US. They are the result of a private, benevolent endeavor established in 1990. Full Canadian or American citizenship is a requirement. Awards are available to both male and female students in all areas of post secondary study. A minimum GPA of 3.0 is required. Criteria other than strictly academic ability and financial need are considered in the selection process. Selected students will receive up to $3000.

Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education Leadership in Child Care Scholarship
This scholarship provides financial assistance (tuition and selected fees) to qualified child care professionals working in child care centers/programs, and family and group homes to obtain a Child Development Associate (CDA) Credential, Short-Term Certificate, Certificate, or Associate in Applied Science/Technology Degree in Child Development/Early Care and Education studies.

The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps Scholarships
The Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) has scholarships available. Scholarships are awarded based on a student's merit and grades, not financial need. Army ROTC scholarships consist of:
- Two, three, and four-year scholarship options based on the time remaining to complete your degree
- Full-tuition scholarships
- The option for room and board in place of tuition, if you should qualify
- Additional allowances for books and fees
- Living expenses of up to $500 per month during the school year
Athens State University students can enroll in the ROTC program through a visiting student agreement with Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, located just north of Huntsville, Alabama. This agreement allows interested students to earn a commission in the Army upon completion of pre-commissioning training requirements and receipt of their degree.
