Fiddlers Convention Officially Decreed the Home of Alabama State Champions

August 30, 2013

Athens, ALA. - The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention has been named the home to Alabama State Champions for certain contests held yearly on the Athens State University campus. The Alabama State Champion categories include Harmonica, Bluegrass Banjo, Dulcimer, Old Time Banjo, Classic Old-time Fiddler, Buck Dancing, Mandolin, Dobro, Old-time Singing, Guitar - Finger Picking, Guitar - Flat Picking, Bluegrass Band, and Bluegrass Old-time Band.

The legislature resolved, with both houses concurring, to recognize the long history and tradition of the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention and that the convention be the official home of those thirteen categories. As a result, the Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention will now be the home to those championships annually and the winners in those categories shall for that year be known as the Alabama State Champions respectively. The joint house resolution was sponsored by State Representative Dan Williams at their February joint session.

“With the upcoming Fiddlers Convention being our 47th, this distinction is appropriate given our longevity and popularity,” stated Athens State Vice President Rick Mould who also serves as Chairman of the event. “We are proud to now be the home to these championships.”

The Tennessee Valley Old Time Fiddlers Convention is known as the "Granddaddy of Midsouth Fiddlers Conventions" for its role in reviving the tradition of competition in old time music. Approximately 15,000 attend the annual convention from almost all of the states. The convention brings some 200 contestants to compete for top prize money in 18 different categories. This year’s convention is scheduled for October 4 and 5.
